Meet The Founder of Yoga for Black Girls - Emporess Jae

Updated: Dec 14, 2024

Hey Sister Sista!

I'm Emporess Jae, former college athlete and selective introvert. I am also the Founder of Yoga for Black Girls and Sistaly Advice!

Growing up, I struggled with severe anxiety. Never having many friends outside of my teammates, I always wondered what It would feel like to be apart of a true sisterhood.

Despite being an athlete my entire life, upon graduating from college, I noticed how unhealthy both my mind and body really were. Two weeks after moving back home from school, I tried working out again, only to find my knee had been inflamed. Knowing the importance of daily movement, I discovered a love for yoga. Yoga was something I began doing on Sundays in the comfort of my living room, without it being too harsh on my injured knee. I then thought "It would be nice if I a girlfriend to do yoga with." There was only problem, I had no one.

Having been fed up with my feelings of being friendless, I researched healthy ways to release unhealthy emotions, and stumbled across the practice of mindful meditation. It was in that moment when I decided to incorporate meditation into my routine as well. As time went on, I found healing in both my physical and mental.

Wishing everyone could feel what I felt, I wanted to purposefully create a safe space for black women to release, heal and find true peace. Hence, Yoga for Black Girls was born.
